FAQs
What authors will we look at ?
A real range. Some would argue that the most important influencers of Dark Academia are poets and writers from the nineteenth century such as Lord Byron, Mary Shelley and Oscar Wilde. Others find the twentieth century more interesting, people like Virginia Woolf and EM Forster. There are contemporary writers that also add to the DA bookshelf, such as Donna Tarte or J K Rowling.
Is Dark Academia the same as Gothic ?
No there are many influences on DA and other genres intertwined with the aesthetic. Gothic styles are definitely a part of Dark Academia but some would argue that some of the fantasy genre also fits such as interest in Tolkien or CS Lewis. Others find resonance in the history of campus novels. There is room for everyone.
Is Dark Academia the same in the States?
There is a big Dark Academia community in the US. Some of the influences and famous sites vary and the style can be more preppy but the basics are the same. Much of the DA aesthetic is inspired by the Brits so that is no surprise. We can talk about the differences as well as the American DA popular places.
Will we cover the Young Adult side of the Dark Academia interest?
We will touch on the Young Adult market as well as the commercial sector such as clothing websites claiming to sell DA clothes. How long depends on the make up of the group.
